SCAN GROCERIES NOT PALMS!

Amazon recently announced plans to expand the use of Amazon One palm scanners for payments at all 500+ Whole Foods stores by the end of 2023. This useless technology is trying to solve a problem that does not exist, AND it puts our sensitive data at risk.

Our grocery bills shouldn’t include risking our digital privacy.

Palm scanning puts our highly sensitive data in danger by storing it in the cloud, where it can be hacked, stolen or abused by law enforcement agencies.

Hackers have already successfully attacked Amazon databases, compromising tens of thousands of users’ data. Amazon has also willingly handed over customer data, including Ring camera footage, to law enforcement without customer knowledge or consent. Giant companies can never be trusted with mass amounts of sensitive data, and especially not a company with a track record like Amazon’s.

Plus, palm scanning for payments simply isn’t more convenient than tapping a credit card or a phone.

Many of the biggest grocery chains in the US have in the past said they don’t use facial recognition–another form of biometric data collection–and don’t have plans to use it. Now stores can take another step towards safeguarding customers’ privacy and data by rejecting unnecessary palm scanning technology.

Your grocery run should not come at the expense of your biometric data. Sign the petition to tell major retailers NO to palm scanning in grocery stores.
